Throughout his career, Dr. Paupoo has been educated among the best and brightest of his generation. He obtained admission to the best high school in the country he was raised in (Republic of Mauritius), after being ranked 16th out of about 10 000 students. During high school, he obtained several local and national awards even being ranked first nationally in Additional Mathematics at some point. Although, he was famous for his natural ability in Mathematics and the Sciences, he came first in his class in nearly every single subject. With the endeavor of applying to the Ivy League universities in the USA, he obtained perfect scores of 800 on the SAT II exam for Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
Dr. Paupoo made history when he became the first student from the Republic of Mauritius to obtain admission to the University of Cambridge to study the Medical Sciences. In addition, this was an unconditional offer which meant that his final grades in high school would not have any impact on this offer. At that time, the University of Cambridge offered admission to less than 10 international students in the Medical Sciences. Therefore, he accepted the offer and never applied to the Ivy League universities in the USA. Subsequently, he was proclaimed a 'laureate' on the Science side as he was ranked among the top students in the country. Thus, he obtained a scholarship which allowed him to study at a university in the United Kingdom. In addition, he was awarded the Cambridge ODA scholarship. At the University of Cambridge, he obtained his Bachelor's, Master's and Medical degrees. He became a medical doctor at the age of 23. He carried out some research work in the Physiological Laboratory. Of note, the Physiological Laboratory is the birthplace of in vitro fertilization as well as a place where a number of groundbreaking research in reproduction took place.
Dr. Paupoo completed an internship at the University of Cambridge. While he was an intern in General Surgery, he decided to complete his training in the USA and he accomplished the impressive feat of completing the USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 and the CSA exams in less than 6 months when these 3 exams are usually completed over a span of 1 to 2 years. At that time, he also passed the MRCOG Part 1 exam (pass rate of about 25%) without taking any revision courses.
Subsequently, Dr. Paupoo moved to the USA to start his postgraduate training in Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) during which he earned multiple awards (see Awards & Honors). Of note, he obtained the highest score in the USA in the CREOG exam (an exam taken by all OB/GYN residents in the USA) during his 3rd year of residency. For all 4 years of residency, his CREOG scores were in the top 1% nationally. One of his professors nicknamed him the 'CREOG King'. Dr. Paupoo became an Obstetrician & Gynecologist at the age of 29 and he obtained his board certification at the age of 30.
This outstanding performance during residency gave him the opportunity to obtain a fellowship position in Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI). This was a very competitive selection process as there were only about 20 open fellowship positions in the USA. During his fellowship, Dr. Paupoo performed innovative research work in the possibility of using gene therapy to target endometriosis. While he was still a Fellow, he completed his thesis as well as published his work in one of the most prestigious journals in the field. At the same time, he obtained the highest score in the university in two graduate courses (Biostatistics & Molecular Diagnostics). He completed his training in REI at the age of 32.
After his fellowship, Dr. Paupoo joined the faculty of Creighton University as an Assistant Professor where he started the Division of REI. In addition to his clinical practice, he taught medical students, OB/GYN residents and fellows in Medical Endocrinology. He was also the Director of Research in the Department of OB/GYN for 4 years.
